The 2011 Golden Globe Awards are just a few days away, and we have selected our picks for which movies and stars will win. Some categories are tough to call...
Many of the races seem to be set in stone, thanks to a number of powerful performances in 2010 like from Natalie Portman in 'Black Swan' to Colin Firth in 'The King's Speech.'
Below, see who we think will and should win on this Sunday evening.
Many of the races seem to be set in stone, thanks to a number of powerful performances in 2010 like from Natalie Portman in 'Black Swan' to Colin Firth in 'The King's Speech.'
Below, see who we think will and should win on this Sunday evening.
Best Picture (Drama)
'Black Swan'
'The Fighter'
'Inception'
'The King's Speech'
'The Social Network'
Should Win: 'The Social Network'
'The King's Speech' has seven nominations (the most so far), but we think the award will go to 'The Social Network' instead, which has shown no signs of slowing down yet.
Keep a keen eye on contenders like 'Black Swan' and 'The Fighter,' as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sometimes goes for the underdog in this category. (Remember 'Babel,' in 2006, and 'Atonement,' in 2007.)
Best Picture (Musical or Comedy)
'Alice in Wonderland'
'Burlesque'
'The Kids Are All Right'
'Red'
'The Tourist'
Should Win: 'The Kids Are All Right'
'The Kids Are All Right' shouldn't have too much trouble winning here, especially as it's the only legitimate Oscar contender of the group. (Sorry, 'The Tourist'!) If the decision is based on star power as it has in the past, expect an upset and the winner will be blockbuster 'Alice in Wonderland.'
Best Director
Darren Aronofsky, 'Black Swan'
David Fincher, 'The Social Network'
Tom Hooper, 'The King's Speech'
Christopher Nolan, 'Inception'
David O'Russell, 'The Fighter'
Should Win: David Fincher, 'The Social Network'
Looks like David Fincher has the win in the bag for Best Director. Darren Aronofsky will give him a run for his money though.
Best Actor (Drama)
Jesse Eisenberg, 'The Social Network'
Colin Firth, 'The King's Speech'
James Franco, '127 Hours'
Ryan Gosling, 'Blue Valentine'
Mark Wahlberg, 'The Fighter'
? Colin Firth, 'The King's Speech'
Firth won rave reviews and a handful of critics' awards for his performance as the stammering King George VI -- and there's no stopping him now. A victory here is a stepping stone to his inevitable Oscar win in February.
? James Franco, '127 Hours'
As much as we loved Firth in 'The King's Speech,' our heart belongs to Franco, whose charming and emotional performance in '127 Hours' carried the movie.
Tough choice, we thought both performances were outstanding. May the best prevail.......
Best Actress (Drama)
Halle Berry, 'Frankie and Alice'
Nicole Kidman, 'Rabbit Hole'
Jennifer Lawrence, 'Winter's Bone'
Natalie Portman, 'Black Swan'
Michelle Williams, 'Blue Valentine'
Should Win: Natalie Portman, 'Black Swan'
With Annette Bening nominated on the comedy side, Portman is sure to win for her amazing performance as good-girl-gone-crazy Nina Sayres in 'Black Swan.' Get that speech ready Natalie...
Best Actor (Musical or Comedy)
Johnny Depp, 'Alice in Wonderland'
Johnny Depp, 'The Tourist'
Paul Giamatti, 'Barney's Version'
Jake Gyllenhaal, 'Love and Other Drugs'
Kevin Spacey, 'Casino Jack'
Will Win: Johnny Depp, 'Alice in Wonderland'
None of these performances seem to be major Oscar contenders. \We believe the award will go to the biggest star, Johnny Depp. He was nominated twice, and just in case you didn't know 'Alice in Wonderland' was one of the biggest hits of the year.
Should Win: Jake Gyllenhaal, 'Love and Other Drugs'
The movie wasn't as good as we thought it would be. Gyllenhaal won us over as the leading man with plenty of charisma. It might be enough to give him the win.
Best Actress (Musical or Comedy)
Annette Bening, 'The Kids Are All Right'
Anne Hathaway, 'Love and Other Drugs'
Angelina Jolie, 'The Tourist'
Julianne Moore, 'The Kids Are All Right'
Emma Stone, 'Easy A'
Should Win: Annette Bening, 'The Kids Are All Right'
Julianne seemed to have gotten more laughs, but Bening was the true anchor of 'The Kids Are All Right'. We believe Annette deserves to win in this category.
Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, 'The Fighter'
Michael Douglas, 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps'
Andrew Garfield, 'The Social Network'
Jeremy Renner, 'The Town'
Geoffrey Rush, 'The King's Speech'
Will Win: Christian Bale, 'The Fighter'
Bale gave a knockdown performance in 'The Fighter' that should be tough to beat.
Should Win: Andrew Garfield, 'The Social Network'
Garfield gave the most sympathetic performance in 'The Social Network.'
May the best actor win.....
Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, 'The Fighter'
Helena Bonham Carter, 'The King's Speech'
Mila Kunis, 'Black Swan'
Melissa Leo, 'The Fighter'
Jacki Weaver, 'Animal Kingdom'
Should Win: Amy Adams, 'The Fighter'
This will probably come down to a race between the two women from 'The Fighter.' We think it will go to Leo, who was great as Mark Wahlberg's very pushy mother. She has won a good share of critics' prizes. I think we'll go with Adams, just because she is due for a win.
Best Screenplay
'127 Hours'
'Inception'
'The Kids Are All Right'
'The King's Speech'
'The Social Network'
Should Win: 'The Social Network'
We don't think anyone can keep up with Aaron Sorkin's screenplay. We don't think he'll lose.
Best Animated Feature Film
'Despicable Me'
'How to Train Your Dragon'
'The Illusionist'
'Tangled'
'Toy Story 3'
Should Win: 'Toy Story 3'
We think the highest-grossing and best movie, in our opinion of 2010, 'Toy Story 3'
will win hands down.
Best Foreign Language Film
'Biutiful'
'The Concert'
'The Edge'
'I Am Love'
'In a Better World'
? 'Biutiful'
'Biutiful' has some has a few things going for it. Star power and a highly acclaimed director. This should give it the win.
? 'I Am Love'
Luca Guadagnino's Italian melodrama deserved a lot more attention than it received Tilda Swinton's gave a fabulous lead performance.
This one is a tough call...We'll see what happens....
Best Original Score
'127 Hours'
'Alice in Wonderland'
'Inception'
'The King's Speech'
'The Social Network'
Will Win: 'The King's Speech'
Alexandre Desplat seems to be a favorite. He just might win...
Should Win: 'The Social Network'
It's clearly the best score, in our opinion among the five nominated scores of the nominated scores. We'll see what happens on Sunday....
Best Original Song
'Bound to You' - 'Burlesque'
'Coming Home' - 'Country Strong'
'I See the Light' - 'Tangled'
'There's a Place for Us' - 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'
'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me' - 'Burlesque'
? 'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me' - 'Burlesque'
Anyone can win here. Our pick? Cher's for her number in 'Burlesque'.
? 'Coming Home - 'Country Strong'
Did we mention it's a weak category?
