'12 Years a Slave,' 'American Hustle' Continue March to Oscar Showdown With Critics' Choice Noms

The Broadcast Film Critics Association stayed firmly in the mainstream today when this poor-man's Golden Globes followed the herd, keeping dual Oscar faves "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" atop the heap with 13 nominations each.

"Gravity" also stayed in the hunt in the runup to the Academy Awards with 10 nominations today for the 19th Critics' Choice Awards.

A point to remember this season: it's about the numbers and "Gravity" is essentially a duet, eligible for fewer acting nominations for its two-person cast, while "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" are big, star-studded ensemble pieces.

Following their success at last week's Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild nominations, those three movies can now be seen as the clear frontrunners. Meanwhile, indie darlings (aka the bridesmaids) "Nebraska," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Her," and "Dallas Buyers Club" made the BFCA's list of 10 Best Picture nominees, alongside Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street," "Saving Mr. Banks," and "Captain Phillips."

Possibly in an effort to round up more talent for their Critics' Choice Movie Awards rodeo — to be broadcast live on Jan. 16 on The CW  – the group announced shamelessly long lists of nominees — six for Best Actor, Best Actress, and the Supporting categories, too, among many others.

With all those nominees there's no chance for an Oprah Winfrey or Robert Redford snub here. And no chance for top-tier talent without a real shot at the Oscar to escape the BFCA awards ceremony. The BFCA, in their effort to be star inclusive, have even tossed in Scarlett Johansson for her vocal talent in "Her."

On the plus side, the BFCA recognizes movies that are typically outside of the elitist, drama-heavy Awards run: films like "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." This also means that Jennifer Lawrence will go up against Sandra Bullock for Best Actress in an Action Movie.

Another good move is the recognition of comedies, particularly the Simon Pegg-Edgar Wright-Nick Frost collaboration "The World's End" – a funny movie that is unambiguously a comedy. And props to a Critics' Group so unstuffy that they recognize Pegg n the category Best Actor in a Comedy. Take that, "American Hustle's" Christian Bale!

With 280 members in the United States and Canada, the BFCA, a collection of radio, TV and online critics, boasts about being the largest critics' organization on the continent. But is bigger better?  Ask the cast of "Gravity."
